The #captionscaptionsON journey began in 1992Leib Lurie's 'Lit' Story
Co-Founder: Kids Read Now, CEO Caption.Cool, CEO Founder: #captions ON Screen Time Reading Campaign C.C Literacy Champion (?) + Cool Grandad! 1962: Leib Lurie falls in love with comic books and becomes an avid reader for excitement and action. 1958: Leib's Mom , Ellen Lurie working with Brown and Black Parents in New York City starts building programs for inclusion, integration and pre-school skill building. This ‘day care’ program grew to 5,000 kids, and became one of those used as a model for what became Head Start in 1964. 1976: Leib and Barbara ( a future reading teacher) get married and have two independent children who are avid readers with a love of reading. 1992: Leib Lurie started his first Closed Captioning reading initiative and never wavered in his belief that closed captioning could improve reading skills. (click video here) Even then Leib was concerned about kids and “screen time” which was TV time) although the term 'screen time' had not yet been coined! Leib goes on to create and build numerous successful companies but remains a passionate literacy advocate. In 2012, Leib and his wife, Barbara Lurie, a teacher and reading specialist who saw the effects of children who weren’t reading at grade level co-founded Kids Read Now, a K-3 in-home summer reading program. Kids Read Now is a 501(c)(3) non-profit firm mailing books home with engaging activities for families; coupled with weekly reminders; the program has been shown to be 98% as effective as summer school for 3% of the cost. In 2021, the program will gift 750,000 books to 85,000 students in 28 States - The Luries' life-long passion for literacy led them to meet many like-minded and like-hearted Literacy Champions. After a few hits and miss in 2020, 1992 Leib's Screen Time Reading Campaign comes to life as the Click! #captionsON Screen Time Reading Campaign in 2021 geared towards 4th to 8th Graders. Ever persistent, Leib will succeed as his serial entrepreneur journey is his foundation for success. The campaign initially launched as Be.Caption.Cool which featured an empathy-based Caption.Cool Reading Family led by "Capty" a travelling, reading -powered unicorn born in the UK who was adopted by American parents. The Caption.Cool family was created by Gloria Maxx, the Lurie's long-time friend, and Leib's former employee and marketing partner through various. Gloria is taking the C.C family with her to Canada, where she and the entire family of characters are working together to create their own empathy-based cartoon! Stay tuned! Barb and Leib along with the entire #captionsON team, are now focused strictly on their trajectory to boosting literacy rates for kids K-3 with Kids Read Now and #captionsON for 4th to 8th Graders - in between being grandparents to three bautiful girls, parents and parents-in law and doggie and kitty parents to Dug, .... and . ?? |
